Nelson Cathedral Choir is a four-part 'traditional' choir, with boys, girls and young women (under 30 years of age, currently) taking the soprano / treble line, predominantly women singing alto and men, both recently broken voices and the more mature, singing tenor and bass.
At present the choir is not large and there are vacancies in all parts.
The choir has a wide repertoire of evensong settings (mainly accompanied) and responses and a smaller one of 'parish'-style Communion services. Anthems and motets range broadly across the standard repertoire common to larger parish churches and smaller cathedrals, both accompanied and unaccompanied and composed from the 16th to the 20th century. Psalms are sung at morning and evening services by the choir alone, to traditional psalm chants.
The choristers receive training in the Royal School of Church Music singers' training scheme and individual and small group tuition is available and encouraged, so that the requirements of the various awards can be met. Attendance at RSCM choir schools is facilitated and a group of children and young people from Nelson is usually present at both summer and winter schools, held at various venues around the country.
Commitment for anything up to 30 hours per month. Occasionally there will be large, formal services, such as civic celebrations, funerals and other commemorations. Easter and Christmas involve extra services too. Holidays are usually taken for second and third Sundays of each of the shorter school breaks and from Christmas Day after the 10am service until the beginning of the school year.
Enquiries about singing in the choir are welcome and should be directed in the first instance to the Minister of Music or to the Parish Office
