The Anglican church maintains the historic ministry of bishops, priests and deacons. In Aotearoa/New Zealand, the Anglican church is broken up into dioceses, each one under the leadership of a bishop. With the diocesan bishop there may be assistant bishops, a dean of the cathedral, and vicars of parishes, who have been ordained priest. Newly ordained clergy are known as deacons, a New Testament ministry that allows the new minister to gain further experience as she/he serves the people.
At Nelson Cathedral, the Dean is assisted by the Reverends Yvonne McLean and the Reverend Allen Michel, priests assistant. We are also privileged to have a good team of honorary clergy, people who have retired from full time ministry but still contribute to the life of the church.
Canon is the title given to a person, ordained or lay, male or female, who serves in relationship to the cathedral. These days most Canons are appointed for fixed terms and are drawn from the whole diocese. The Canons meet with the Bishop and the Dean to form the governing body of the cathedral, the Chapter.
Yvonne McLean was raised in Nelson, studied at Nelson Polytechnic, qualified and worked as a Chartered Accountant before travelling overseas.
After six years in Scotland she returned with her husband and two children to live in Stoke.
In 1989 she joined the Third Order Franciscans (TSSF) and began a journey which led her to leave accountancy in 1995 for voluntary work in the church. She was ordained in 2002.
After serving as an assistant at St Barnabas, Stoke, she moved to Nelson Cathedral at the beginning of 2005 where she is on the full time staff as Priest Assistant.
Her favourite area of ministry is incorporation, which means helping people move to the next step on their faith journey, whatever that is for them.
Allen Michel was born and raised in Invercargill and worked in pharmacy in New Zealand and Australia before being ordained at Nelson Cathedral in 2002.
Allen enjoys working with children, young people, and caring for those older people in our community.
Since 2003 he has been responsible for the services at the retirement homes in the parish and has formed a special relationship with the residents and staff at The Wood Retirement Home.
In his spare time Allen can be found with his collection of Antarctic stamps or fulfilling his passion for photography.
