The official seat of the Bishop of Nelson is found here in the sanctuary. An ancient word for this seat is cathedra
hence the description of the building as a cathedral.
As a cathedral we are privileged to serve the wider church, the diocese and the city. Our worship follows traditional
Anglican patterns, although from time to time we enjoy less formal worship suitable for the whole family.
The ministry we offer is traditional but not outmoded.
A faithful team of clergy led by Dean Charles Tyrrell looks after the preaching and teaching the leading
of worship and pastoral care. A small army of dedicated lay people contributes sacrificially of their time
and talents to the ongoing ministry.
Although there is much work to be done on the building (and donations and bequests are always appreciated),
Nelson Cathedral is a much loved asset.
Our prayer is for the fulfilment of our aim, which is:
Nelson Cathedral: refreshing lives, transforming faith, at the heart of the community
Clergy
The Anglican church maintains the historic ministry of bishops, priests and deacons. In Aotearoa/New Zealand, the Anglican
church is broken up into dioceses, each one under the leadership of a bishop. With the diocesan bishop there may be assistant
bishops, a dean of the cathedral, and vicars of parishes, who have been ordained priest.
At Nelson Cathedral, the Dean is assisted by the Reverends Yvonne McLean and the Reverend Allen Michel, priests
assistant. We are also privileged to have a good team of honorary clergy, people who have retired from full time ministry but still
contribute to the life of the church.

Vestry
The Cathedral Vestry is the name given to the committee which has responsibility for the parish life of Christ Church, Nelson.
Vestry's functions are to ensure the provision of the ministry at the cathedral, to manage the finances, and to have a special
care of the interior of the cathedral building.
Vestry is made up of the Dean (chairperson), full time clergy, churchwardens and synod representatives (ex-officio) and members
elected at the annual meeting of parishioners.
Chapter
The Chapter is a group of people appointed to work with the Bishop for the care and development of the cathedral.
With the Bishop, who is the chairperson and supported by the Dean, and the Chancellor (the diocesan legal adviser),
there are four clerical Canons and six lay Canons.
The Chapter meets every two months at the Anglican Centre.
The canons represent all aspects of our varied diocese and contribute their own skills and wisdom in the care of our precious cathedral building.
As well as the full Chapter meeting, there are two sub committees which meet in the intervening months to ensure the ongoing work of the Chapter.

Groups
Fellowship is a key part of Christianity
(Acts 2:42).
It's good to journey together offering our friendship and support
and one of the main ways we can get to know each other better is to join a group!
Why not check out the many different groups available at the cathedral and
see if one of them is for you?
